About Us
The Chestermere Professional Firefighters Association consists of 29 full-time members with 7 members per shift across 4 shifts (A, B, C, D). One Captain, one Lieutenant, and five Firefighters comprise each crew. Currently, one Platoon Chief overlooks the crews. Each shift works a rotation of one 24-hr shift, two days off, and one 24-hr shift followed by 4 days off.
Amongst these members are those who truly care for their service to Chestermere and its residents. After all, the Chestermere Professional Firefighters Association has a rich history to uphold.
Its history begins under the Chestermere Cabin Owner's Association pre-1970. The first fire hall, an old shack that was once a first aid station located down by the lake. Its first fire truck was a 1952 Ford with an old gas water pump. The fire service quickly evolved from the C.C.O.A to the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake Fire Protection Group in late 1979, to Chestermere Fire & Rescue, to part of Rocky View Fire Services, to its current Chestermere Fire Services. Some of the service's key moments include;
1981- Fire Protection Group acquires a single-axle water truck painted yellow with a water pump and some used fire gear.
1985- The first two SCBA are acquired with a total of 25 calls for the year.
1988- The first dedicated fire engine was acquired. A refurbished Calgary Fire Department International King-Seagrave.
1993- The Town of Chestermere Incorporated and the fire department name is changed to Chestermere Fire & Rescue.
1994-Chestermere Fire & Rescue acquires its first boat for responding to hazards and emergencies on the lake breeding the need for aquatic rescue training.
1996- The village office with a two-bay fire hall receives a new addition to the building. The addition gives more space for a small kitchen for the volunteers at the time, an office for the Fire Chief, an area for training, and a floor drain in the hose tower.
2008- Chestermere Town Council signed a contract with Rockyview County to administrate the fire service. Chestermere now has its first full-time members and part-time member staffing model.
2011- A brand new multi-service fire hall is built housing RCMP, Chestermere Peace Officers, and Chestermere Fire Services.
2012- The town of Chestermere ends its contract with Rockyview County and administrates fire service once again.
2017- The current 24/7, full-time staffing model is employed.
2020- Members of Chestermere Fire Services joined the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), becoming known as Chestermere Professional Firefighters Local 5284.
Proud of our past. Prepared for our Future.
